The Life of Rosa Lee Johnson Winn

Rosa Lee Johnson Winn was born on February 23, 1940, in Cheneyville, Louisiana, to the late William Johnson, Jr. and Ethel Mae Reynolds. She lived a full and meaningful life of 86 years before peacefully passing away at her home in Alexandria, Louisiana, on Thursday, September 10, 2026.

Rosa’s early years were spent in Louisiana, where she attended Bunkie High School and Carter C. Raymond before graduating from Peabody High School. During her high school years, she was affectionately known by the nickname “Bunkie.”

Throughout her life, Rosa possessed a strong work ethic and a genuine desire to care for others. She worked in nursing and healthcare as a Certified Nursing Assistant, providing care and assistance to those in need. She was also a talented seamstress whose skill and attention to detail reflected the meticulous nature she carried into many areas of her life.

Rosa was outgoing, outspoken, hospitable, and deeply family-oriented. She enjoyed opening her home and hosting her family, creating opportunities for those she loved to gather together. She loved cooking and took pleasure in preparing meals for others. She also enjoyed fishing and the simple moments that allowed her to relax and enjoy life.

Those who knew Rosa will also remember the pride she took in her appearance. She was a stylish woman who was meticulous about how she dressed and presented herself. Whether at home, among family and friends, or attending worship, Rosa appreciated looking her very best.

An important part of Rosa’s life was her relationship with Jehovah. On July 3, 1993, she became a baptized publisher associated with the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Her faith provided her with hope and confidence in the Bible’s promise of a resurrection—a time when those who have fallen asleep in death can live again. Her family and friends can continue to draw comfort from that same Scriptural hope.

Rosa was preceded in death by her parents, William Johnson, Jr. and Ethel Mae Reynolds; her husband, Melvin Winn, Sr.; two children, Vickie Theresa Winn and Melvin Winn, Jr., affectionately known as “Lump”; and her siblings, Leroy Johnson, Erma Robinson, Pearl Compton, and Ruby Elie.

She leaves to cherish the many memories of her life her daughter, Wanda Gail Winn; two sons, Calvin Lee Winn and Eric Bernard Winn, Sr. (Mae); nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother, Johnnie Lee Christian; three sisters-in-law, Bertha Mae Johnson, Etter Faye Lee, and Oggie Winn; one brother-in-law, Charles Compton; her godchild, Mallory “Cookie” Griffin; and a host of other relatives, spiritual brothers and sisters, and dear friends.

Rosa’s family will remember a woman who loved them, enjoyed bringing people together, spoke her mind, welcomed others into her home, and lived life with a style and personality unmistakably her own. Though her presence will be deeply missed, those who loved her can find comfort in remembering the life she lived and in the Bible’s promise of seeing loved ones again in the resurrection.
