Life Story of Rita Gayle Byrd

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for though art with me, thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Psalms 23:4

Rita Gayle Byrd was born on October 11, 1964, to the late Eddie Byrd Sr, and Vera Johnson Byrd. She peacefully departed this life on Friday, March 27, 2026, at Christus St. Francis Cabrini Hospital.

At an early age, she accepted Christ and was baptized, beginning a lifelong relationship with God that she cherished deeply. She was educated in the local school system and graduated from Alexandria Senior High School in 1982. During her high school years, she was an active member of the marching band, where she formed lasting friendships and memories.

In 1984, Rita welcomed her son, Larry Byrd, with the late Larry Givens. Her son remained one of her greatest joys.

Rita dedicated much of her life to serving others through her work. She was a committed employee at St. Mary’s Training School for a combined total of 35 years, where she made a lasting impact on both her colleagues and those she served. She also spent two years working at Westside Rehabilitation Center. Rita was known for her strong work ethic, compassionate spirit, and willingness to help both her staff and those in need. She found joy in her faith, her church, her home, and her family. She was always ready to lend a helping hand and was deeply devoted to uplifting those around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents and 15 siblings. She leaves to cherish her memories: her son, Larry (DeAandra) Byrd of Spring, Texas; seven siblings, Jessie Battles of Alexandria, Louisiana; Eddie “Tiny” Byrd of Alexandria, Louisiana; James L. (Keisha) Byrd of Lawton, Oklahoma; Thelma (Edward, Sr) of Alexandria, Louisiana; Doris Overstreet of Alexandria, Louisiana; Henry (Odessa) Byrd of Alexandria, Louisiana; and Anthony (Salease) Byrd of Ball, Louisiana; along with a many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
