Gertrude Jenkins King
August 2, 1938 – October 19, 2026
Gertrude Jenkins King, 88, of Boyce, Louisiana, passed away on Monday, October 19, 2026, at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, Louisiana. She was born on August 2, 1938, in Boyce, Louisiana, to Otis Jenkins, Sr., and Rosa Beamon Jenkins.
Gertrude received her formal education in Boyce, attending Rosenwald School and Boyce Junior High, which later became Alfred Wettermark High School. She worked in domestic services as a housekeeper, bringing care and dedication to the homes and families she served.
A woman of faith, Gertrude loved her church and the pastors who guided her over the years at Magnolia Baptist Church: Pastor Clifton Wells, Pastor Albert Sykes, Jr., and her current pastor, Pastor Frank Doug Randle. She served as president of the Mission, worked on the Cleaning Committee, and willingly lent a helping hand wherever she was needed.
Gertrude was a natural caregiver. She lovingly cared for her parents before their passing and extended that same compassion to others. When someone could no longer manage daily tasks, she would cook meals and clean their home. Her willingness to help was a reflection of her humble and caring spirit.
She loved the color blue, especially the blue of the sky, and found joy in flowers, planting, and gardening. A talented, hands-on woman, she enjoyed recovering furniture and was a wonderful cook. Although mild-mannered, Gertrude was firm in her convictions and never hesitated to enforce discipline when needed. Her family knew both her gentle care and her stern guidance.
Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she delighted in spoiling them. Through her care, service, and devotion, she leaves her family with cherished memories and a lasting example of love in action.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jessie King, Jr.; five brothers, Otis Jenkins, Jr., James Jenkins, John Jenkins, David Jenkins, and Andrew Jenkins, Sr.; and one sister, Ruby Hankins Sykes.
She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Marjorie Veal and Karen King, both of Boyce, Louisiana; two sons, Jessie King (Lucy) of Boyce, Louisiana, and Rev. Tony King (Minister Natasha) of Troy, Alabama; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by one brother, Bishop Hughes Jenkins, Sr. (Ella), of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Ola Mae Smith of Boyce, Louisiana, Oletha Belle of Alexandria, Louisiana, and Minister Irma Cifton of Houston, Texas; a special sister-in-law, Mildred Jenkins of Alexandria, Louisiana; sisters-in-law, Doretha King of Boyce, Louisiana, Beatrice Sergent of Pineville, Louisiana, and Mary Morgan of Albuquerque, New Mexico; brothers-in-law, Sam King and Donnell King, both of Alexandria, Louisiana, and Eugene King of Lena, Louisiana; and two godchildren, April White and Rossalind Gordon, both of Houston, Texas.
Public viewing and visitation will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral service begins at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church in Lena, Louisiana. Interment will follow at King Family Cemetery in Boyce, Louisiana.
